Factors associated with lameness in dairy cattle

نویسنده

  • ROGER BLOWEY
چکیده

An intervention trial by Hedges and others (2001) studying 1109 cow-years, in which every lame cow was examined and recorded by a veterinary surgeon, determined the four main causes of lameness to be sole ulcers, white line disease, digital dermatitis and interdigital necrobacillosis (‘foul’ or ‘foot rot’) (see graph on the right). Sole ulcers and white line disease are defects of the hoof and, as such, are the result of disruption to the corium (ie, laminitis or, more correctly, coriosis), whereas foul and digital dermatitis are infectious disorders of the epidermis and dermis, respectively. For discussion of the pathogenetic mechanisms involved, see standard texts (eg, Blowey 2004).

Risk Factors Associated with Foot Lameness in Dairy Cattle and a Suggested Approach for Lameness Reduction

Lameness in cattle is a clinical sign with a multifactorial aetiology. A focused programme for lameness reduction requires that farmers and their advisors recognise the main types of lameness occurring in cattle on their farm(s) and know the seasonal and lactational patterns of lameness and the management and environment of these cattle. In this paper we propose an approach to targeting cattle ...

Arteriographic Evaluation of Laminitis Digits in the Hind Limbs of Dairy Cattle

Objective: Laminitis is one of the main causes of lameness in dairy cattle. In this situation the corium blood circulation is disrupted and the production of healthy horny hoof wall is reduced. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the arteriographic pattern of the digital arterial branches in the laminitic digits and to compare them with the normal digits. Design: Original study. Animals...

1 Stepping Out : Recent Advances in Detecting Lameness in Dairy Cattle

Lameness in dairy cows impacts negatively on herd welfare and productivity. It is thought to be closely associated with avoidance of pain caused by limb lesions and, particularly in dairy cattle, by hoof lesions (Dyer et al., 2007). Freedom from pain is one of the Five Freedoms of animal welfare (FAWC, 1997), so lameness is a sign of poor welfare. Besides this, there are treatment costs (Almeid...

Lameness in Dairy Cattle: A Debilitating Disease or a Disease of Debilitated Cattle?
